The slant-mouthed tubular jade artifacts is one of the most important types of jade in the Hongshan Culture. Its function has been a highly debated topic in the study of Hongshan jade artifacts.Based on the materials unearthed from the Niuheliang Site, and using morphological comparison and contextual analysis, this study determines that such jade artifacts were likely used as scepter heads in combination with wooden handles, serving as special ceremonial tools symbolizing power. This new understanding of their function indicates that the tubular scepter heads in Hongshan Culture reflect a uniquely Chinses tradition of scepter use with an independent origin, rather than being entirely influenced by Western cultures.
