Nowadays in the world,the saxophone has become an indispensable instrument in mili-tary bands,what are the reasons?Based on historical documents,the article mainly examines the orchestration of French military bands containing saxophones in the 19th century,and give the con-clusion the failure of use the C bass saxophone in symphonic orchestra leaded to focus on French military bands that found an alternative way to use the saxophone that achieved great success,i.e.by creating the bE and bB saxophone families for French military bands.The use of five different types of saxophones in French military bands merges the timbre of brass and woodwind instruments and balances their volume.So the saxophone family contributed greatly to the homogeneous sound of the military band.
