Definition and Distinction of "Harmonized Form" and "Original Form" and Its Important Significance
Chinese linguistic studies have attempted to define and distinguish the concepts of"harmonized form"and"original form"within homophonic structures. Despite the longstanding use of these concepts, the debates persist regarding their exact definitions. Currently, there are three representative viewpoints regarding their definition and differentiation, but none of them can claim absolute superiority, whether focusing on the inception and termination of homophony, the constancy and variability of formal expression,or the internal and external semantic levels. By comparing these concepts with those of metaphor and metonymy, namely through comparing them with vehicle and tenor,as well as through consideration based on the symmetry and neatness of terminological systems,a new viewpoint is proposed which distinguishes between harmonized form and original form based on correspondence to means or to ends, this proposition is rigorously verified. Scientifically defining and distinguishing between harmonized form and original form holds academic and practical significance, whether for investigating the mechanism of homophony formation, academic exchange in homophonic studies, comprehension of homophonic annotations, smooth conduct of language teaching,or standardized compilation of language dictionaries.
