Hesitating:France Decision-making to Recognize the People's Republic of China during 1949-1950 Basing Declassified Archives——Also about Collection Tactics of Archives for Cold War International History
Basing archives from French Foreign Ministry and French Council of Ministers,it can been found that French Government intended to recognize the People's Republic of China in January 1950,and its immediate cause was that UK had made decision to recognize the People's Republic of China. After April 1950,France decided to postpone the recognition of the People's Republic of China in the long term, mainly because of the pressure from US,the Sino-Soviet increasingly close relations, and the position of UK that had recognized China but not gained corresponding benefits. The weakness and hesitating in the France decision-making process to recognize China reflected the diplomatic feature of French Fourth Republic. The case has also reflected that we can more easily find research material in voluminous archives if the political structure and executive branches of one nation and the holdings of archives have been ascertained, and key archives have been selected.
