A Study on Digital Literacy of the Elderly Population under the Perspective of Self-Determination Theory
Enhancing the digital literacy of the elderly population is an inevitable requirement in achieving human development and a necessary support in achieving modernization of society.Current research has largely focused on the elderly population as passive recip-ients to enhance digital literacy, ignoring the subjective initiative of the elderly population.Therefore.this article uses self-determination theory to externalize the self needs, ability needs and belonging needs of the elderly population into digital life, digital learning and dig-ital safety, thus constructs a basic evaluation standard of digital literacy of the elderly population in China, and analyzes the overall level of digital literacy of the elderly population in combination with the data of the Chinese General Social Survey. It is found that the digital literacy of the elderly population has the problems of insufficient integration of digital life, uneven digital learning ability, and insufficient awareness of digital security, which are due to the differences in subjective and objective cultural cognition,in dependence on learning paths, and in information technology education.Accordingly,it is suggested that a training, support, and guarantee system for digital lit-eracy of the elderly population in the digital era can be constructed from a social demand, collaborative and inclusive orientation.
