What Kind of MOOCs Do Students Need?A Learner Needs Analysis Based on User Reviews and Its Impact on Course Satisfaction
MOOC platforms have attracted large numbers of online learners, whereas learners'learning outcomes in MOOCs do not always meet expectations. Therefore, influencing factors of MOOC course quality and learning effectiveness have drawn researchers'attention. However, fewer studies have investigated what kind of MOOCs current learners actually need from the perspective of learning needs.Through keyword extraction, word vector transformation, and cluster analysis algorithms, this article conducted a text mining of national boutique Chinese university MOOCs'learner reviews.Nine categories of MOOC learners'learning needs were identified:teacher qualities, perceived academic competence, course content, learning resources, social belonging, learning management, platform value, learning tasks and technical support.Furthermore, text sentiment analysis and attention calculation were taken, deriving the course satisfaction of different learning needs, and finally using the Random Forest Model to explore the impact of various types of learning needs on learner satisfaction. Results show that three types of learning needs, namely course content, instructor attributes, and perceived academic competence, have the greatest impact on MOOC learner satisfaction. Methods for obtaining MOOC learners'learning needs are proposed.Findings are expected to provide reference for improving MOOC platforms and enhancing MOOC quality.
