A Review of Research on the Custom of Chewing Areca Nuts in China
Academic research on the custom of chewing areca nuts has been ongoing for nearly a century,focusing primarily on investigating and studying the areca nut custom in specific regions,as well as exploring the spread and decline of the custom in China during historical periods and their reasons.These studies have re-vealed the main areas where the custom of chewing areca nuts is prevalent in China and the significant role of ar-eca nuts in social life.However,key issues such as the reasons for the formation of the custom and its transmis-sion mechanism have not been resolved.It is recommended to collect more comprehensive historical data on the custom of chewing areca nuts and conduct a comprehensive and systematic study on the reasons for chewing areca nuts,the formation of the areca nut custom in China,and its transmission mechanism.This can provide histori-cal references and response strategies for addressing social issues caused by chewing areca nuts.
