Establishment and Validation of Reference Intervals for Uric Acid in Male Cadets at Military Academies
Objective To establish and validate the reference interval of uric acid for male cadets at military academy during physical examination. Methods 1,271 male cadets who participated in the annual physical examination of a military academy were selected as the study subjects, and were tested for uric acid using Beckman Coulter's AU-5800 automatic biochemical analyzer and its accompanying reagent kits. The test results were statistically analyzed and calculated to establish a reference interval, and 80 cases of healthy cadets in other military schools were selected to validate the developed reference interval. Results The dataset showed a skewed distribution, and the reference interval was calculated as 234.0-468.0μmol/L using the 95%(P2.5-P97.5)percentile method of the nonparametric. The validation of the uric acid measurements of the 80 reference medical examination cadets was considered passed as 78 of them fell within the range of the established reference interval. Conclusion The upper and lower limits of the established reference interval are higher than the reference interval for adult males(208.0-428.0μmol/L)used in our laboratory; The establishment of reference intervals for the uric acid results of male cadets at military academy in physical examination will prevent false elevation of uric acid results from causing psychological burdens or excessive medical treatment to cadets, and enhance the overall efficacy of cadets'health care conditions.
