The Effect of Acid-base Electrolyzed Water Inhibition of the Biofilms Grown on Gardnerella Vaginalis
Objective To observe and evaluate the effect of acid-base electrolyzed water on the formation of Gardnerella vaginalis biofilm. Methods Gardnerella vaginalis were isolated and purified from vaginal secretion specimens of patients with initial diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. The biofilm formation of Gardnerella vaginalis co-cultured with acid-base electrolyzed water for 48h or Gardnerella vaginalis cultured for 24h followed by acid-base electrolyzed water were evaluated by measuring the OD value and MIC,and status of biofilm was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Results The biofilm formation of Gardnerella vaginalis was getting better after cultured for 48h (P<0.05).Acid-base electrolyzed water had bactericidal effect on Gardnerella vaginalis, and biofilm formation of Gardnerella vaginalis was reduced, while the uninhibited and biofilm-formed Gardnerella vaginalis showed no significant changes of biofilm formation after acid-base electrolyzed water treatment. Conclusion Acid-base electrolyzed water inhibits the biofilm formation of Gardnerella vaginalis, but has no effect on the mature biofilm of Gardnerella vaginalis.
