The Laboratory Analysis of a Case of Pseudohyponatremia
Objective To improve the current clinical understanding of pseudohyponatremia through laboratory analysis of a case of hyponatremia. Methods The potential causes of hyponatremia were investigated based on the patients'disease history, laboratory test results, analytical methodology and changes of the methodology. Results Patient's hyperproteinemia interfered with the detection of sodium by indirect ion selective electrode, resulting in low false results of sodium results.Blood natrium level was normal after direct blood gas analysis. Conclusion Usage of automatic biochemical analyzer to detect sodium in hyperproteinemia could result in low falsity, suggesting that a direct method should be used to avoid misdiagnosis.
