Population dynamics of Maruca vitrata on adzuki bean in Beijing and chemical control
Population dynamics and damage of Maruca vitrata on adzuki bean in Beijing were studied by the method of field investigation and light trapping. In addition, the efficiency insecticide was screened out based on the field control effects of three insecticides on M.vitrata.The results indicated that legume pod borer larva had a total of 5 instars.During which, the young larvae fed on tender flower and resulted in the falling of flowers and buds, whereas the old larvae bored into the pod and transferred from one pod to another to feed on bean seeds.Adults showed weak phototaxis to black light lamp and high pressure mercury lamp.In Beijing, larvae of M.vitrata started from the flowering of adzuki beanand reached a peak at the end of August till the beginning of September. The efficiency test showed that 5% Chlorantraniliprole when diluted 1000 x worked better than Beta-cypermethrin+Emamectin Benzoate or Avermectin, and thus could protect adzuki beans from being damaged by M.vitrata over 20 days when the larval population density was over five or six per hundred flowers or pods.
