The Origin of Sports Diplomacy:A Study Based on the Investigation of Political Modernity
Systematically thinking about"how sports diplomacy came into being"is a fundamental step in to promoting the theoretical construction and practical innovation of sports diplomacy.Starting from political modernity,this study examined the path elements,condition elements,and value elements of sports diplomacy based on theoreti-cal explanations.The study argues that the path elements of sports diplomacy lie in the"coupling of sports and diplo-macy that shapes a common pathway for inter-state relations".Political modernity has nurtured a series of conditional elements for the occurrence of sports diplomacy from three levels.At the level of modem democracy,it includes fun-damental concerns and communication norms,government leadership and public participation,rational competition and civilized interaction;at the political system level,it includes bureaucratic leadership and bureaucratic systems,operational mechanism and communication patterns,official exchanges and non-governmental communication;at the level of party politics,it includes practical vision and image building,ideology and practical principles,policy objec-tives and resource allocation.Furthermore,the research summarizes five value elements of sports diplomacy,including exchanging sensitive diplomatic information,expressing specific diplomatic attitudes,maintaining stable in-ter-state relations,demonstrating the country's hard and soft power,and shaping a good national image.
