Rites and Music and Ideals of Music and Dance in the Western Han and the Xin Dynasty
During the Western Han Dynasty and the Xin Dynasty, the rites and music system was a crucial aspect to construct national politics. However, the establishment of the rites and music system in the Han Dynasty went through a prolonged and tortuous process. This period saw constant changes in the rites and music system,as Confucian scholars idealized the rites and music of the Western Zhou Dynasty, leading to every attempt to introduce a new system being rejected by scholars who held conservative Confucian views.Correspondingly, music and dance,as integral parts of the rite and music system, also underwent a return to classicism. The return to classicism in music and dance during the Western Han Dynasty and the Xin Dynasty reflected the increasing dominance of Confucianism and a process of deepening the music and dance ideals.
