From Sorcery to Nuo:an Ontogenetic Study of Chinese Nuo Dance
Nuo dance is an art form that has not yet been sufficiently explored.Previous studies on Nuo culture have mostly focused on its transmission and distribution, often confusing Nuo rituals,Nuo dance, and Nuo drama, resulting in a lack of a comprehensive understanding of Chinese Nuo dance.Based on classical texts, this paper employs an ontogenetic approach and focuses on the origins of Nuo dance. It places dance, the"core element,"within an interactive system and examines the form of Nuo dance as an independent system.Following the main thread of The Rites of Zhou,it analyzes the nature, structure, function, and characteristics of Nuo dance, providing theoretical foundations for restoring the cultural significance of the ontogenesis of Nuo dance. The paper proposes four historical forms:the first is the shamanistic form, characterized by masked impersonation of gods;the second is the Nuo ritual form, dominated by national ceremonies;the third is the entertainment form, focused on pleasing gods and humans alike;and the fourth is the pan-Nuo form, centered around the annual gathering. The preliminary conclusion is that Nuo chose dance as its medium from its inception, and dance serves as the narrative form of Nuo culture.Regarding the relationship between Nuo dance and Nuo drama, the problem of which comes first cannot be ruled out.Nuo dance came first, followed by Nuo drama, which is the basic logic and developmental process.Despite instances of performances combining elements of both dance and drama, the core structure remains masked ritual dance.
