Stylistic Characteristics of Dance Expression:Reflections Based on Semiotic Theory
From a semiotic perspective, dance style is determined by the codes governing the relationships between movements,as well as their interactions with d music, costumes and other elements. These codes, which define stylistic characteristics, are referred to as stylistic codes. The stylistic codes of dance are formed through the interaction between the individual characteristics of the creator and the style of the content or imagery being expressed.Consequently, the dance style embodies formal and content attributes, based on the organic unity of form and content. The formal characteristics of dance style include regulatory and indicative aspects. The regulatory aspects are essential for maintaining the purity of a dance style, providing a foundation for its stable development, while the indicative aspects drive the evolution of dance style, enabling new developments within its language system. The content characteristic of dance style is conceptual as illustrated by movement patterns, which can independently convey a theme or assist in shaping the imagery and expressing the thematic meaning of the work. Thus, regulatory, indicative, and conceptual aspects constitute the three basic characteristics of dance style. It is beneficial to clarify these three characteristics for the theoretical development of dance style, the promotion of dance creation, and the summary of the expressive and aesthetic rules of dance.
