Driven and Endogenous:the Teaching by the Foreign Teachers and Aesthetic Practice of the First Undergraduate Choreography Class at Beijing Dance Academy
The 1985 undergraduate class is the first choreography undergraduate program in the history of Beijing Dance Academy, internally referred to as the"Reform and Opening-Up Class"due to its curriculum, faculty, and aesthetic concepts shaped by the time when the graduation entered the reform and opening-up period and the success of talent cultivation. This paper explores the unique differences between Chinese and American teaching philosophies and pedagogies in this class. It conducts an archival analysis of the Beijing Dance Academy's specific documents to extract three core choreographic concepts that have persisted throughout history:1.How has the Soviet model of"dance education"and its aesthetics been renewed within the consciousness of Chinese choreography after the establishment of Sino-American diplomatic relations?2.What are the key techniques and aesthetic features of"Chinese couple dance"in comparison to ballet?3.What is the classification of dance genres and the language sequence in choreography teaching in China, the reasons behind this"national language order",and how does it respond to criticisms in overseas dance research? Finally,it examines how the Soviet paradigm and American influences in the historical practice of"academic-style"choreography education at Beijing Dance Academy continue to influence the concepts and aesthetics of contemporary Chinese dance(dance drama)creation. The seventy-year development of Beijing Dance Academy and the forty-year history of the choreography discipline have profoundly influenced the basic forms of contemporary dance creation.
