On the Origin of the Bronze Zhi Excavated from Zhuwa Street in Pengzhou
A total of 40 pieces of bronze were excavated from the cellars at the Zhuwa Street in Pengzhu,Sichuan Province in 1959 and 1980 separately.Among them,Qin Fu Gui zhi and Muzheng Fu Ji zhi are bronze artifacts from the Shang Dynasty. These Shang Dynasty bronze artifacts unearthed in the Chengdu Plain are believed by scholars to be spoils of war obtained by the Shu people when they followed King Wu of Zhou to suppress King Zhou.In fact, the origin of these bronze artifacts may al-so be like this:after the Eastern Expedition of Duke Zhou, the refugees of the Shang Dynasty migra-ted on a large scale.Among them,a family of Shang refugees who were skilled in making bronze arti-facts did not want to accept the rule of the Zhou Dynasty,so they did not hesitate to cross steep mountains and migrate far,and finally arrived at the Chengdu Plain. After they arrived, refugees not only presented their own bronze Zhi and Zun to the nobles of the Shu area they belonged to,but also helped them replicate a batch of bronze containers and weapons that were both unique to the Shu area and similar to those of the Central Plains. This may be the reason why the bronze artifacts found on Zhuwa Street in Pengzhou are mixed with Shang Dynasty bronze artifacts.
