Temple Names and Political Ethics:The Rise and Reasons of the"Huguo Temple"during the Jin and Tang Dynasties
The"Huguo Temple",which expresses the meaning of protecting the country,is an important manifestation of the sinicized practice of Buddhist thought of protecting the country.The"Huguo Temple"that can be seen from historical records first appeared in the Jiankang area of the Eastern Jin Dynasty,mostly built by the imperial family.During the Northern and Southern dynas-ties,the number of"Huguo Temple"increased significantly,and there was a phenomenon that the supreme ruler participated in the establishment of"Huguo Temple"to bring Buddhism into the ranks of praying for the country.During the Sui and Tang dynasties,in addition to the capital city,a large number of"Huguo Temples"also appeared in local prefectures and counties,indicating the enhance-ment of national consciousness.The emergence of"Huguo Temple"reflects the political expectation and intervention of the imperial power towards Buddhism,and the changes in the number and name of"Huguo Temple"in different periods also reflect the phased development of Buddhist political ethics.
