The Story of Traveling to the Underworld from the Perspective of the Persuading Beneficence Movement in the Ming and Qing Dynasties
In the Ming and Qing dynasties,a nationwide movement of persuading beneficence was launched from top to bottom under the social background of the integration of the three religions. In this movement, the Story of Traveling to the Underworld, which contains the gene of urging good-ness,interacted with the books of persuading beneficence, forming the intertextuality text group. However, different from the books of persuading beneficence, the Story of Traveling to the Under-world features the iconic plot structure of traveling to underworld. The characteristic of persuading goodness in the Story of Traveling to the Underworld lies in highlighting the retribution in the hell through the protagonist's travels in the underworld, and comprehensively showcasing the culture of underworld law from the orderly distribution of hell space, harsh and brutal hell trials and punish-ments,in order to achieve the goal of warning people, stopping evil, and promoting good.In the Sto-ry of Traveling to the Underworld, not only are there numerous words of advice for goodness, but there are also many ideas and beliefs presented in the books of persuading beneficence. The editors e-ven truthfully reflected on the policies of preaching imperial edicts and the system of village conve-nance at that time. All of these make the Story of Traveling to the Underworld filled with a strong color of books of persuading beneficence. However, the strong sense of urging people towards good-ness weakens aesthetic qualities and affects the overall artistic level of the book.
