Re-textual Research on the Inscriptions on the Shishan Plate
The inscription on the Shishan Plate is a feudal inscription.Shishan was a minister sent by the King of Zhou to escort the Marquis of Zhong((中))to his state. He also had the task of collec-ting tribute and taxes from the southern vassal states. His position was equivalent to the"worker of-ficial"in the inscriptions on the Shiyuan Gui and Yang Gui,and he was a subordinate of the minister of public works of the three excellencies or chiefs. The enfeoffment of Marquis of Zhong((中))by the King of Zhou was not only for military purposes(i.e.to control the southern barbarian vassal states of Ruo,Jing,Fang, etc.,and prevent them from posing a threat to the royal family of the Zhou Dy-nasty),but also for economic purposes(i.e.to urge the surrounding vassal states to pay tribute and assist the ministers sent by the royal family in collecting tribute). The State of Zhong((中))is respon-sible for receiving, hoarding, and managing the tribute and taxes collected.
