Inheritance and innovation of ZHANG Zhongjing's thoughts by ZHANG Yuansu of the Yishui School
After the Medical Book Bureau in the Northern Song Dynasty corrected and published ZHANG Zhongjing's Treatise on Cold Pathgenic Febrile Diseases and Synopsis of Golden Chamber, these works became widely circulated during the Song and Jin dynasties, having a profound impact on the physicians of the Yishui School, represented by ZHANG Yuansu. In his work Revelation of Medicine,ZHANG Yuansu explicitly mentions"Zhongjing"10 times, and in the chapter"Six Qi Methods of Treatment",he discusses Zhongjing's formulas in detail, citing 11 prescriptions. In other chapters,he mentions Zhongjing's formulas 29 times, providing thorough affirmation and study of them, thus demonstrating his inheritance of Zhongjing's academic ideas. This also indirectly refutes the claim in The History of Jin and ZHANG Jifu's Revelation of Medicine:Preface, which states that ZHANG Yuansu did not use ancient formulas, showing that the interpretation is biased.ZHANG Yuansu, incorporating his own academic approach of"organ and viscera pathology",developed a new classification system for Zhongjing's formulas, breaking free from Zhongjing's focus on using pungent drugs to expel sweat for treating dampness-heat and joint obstruction. He was the first to propose the use of bitter cold drugs to clear heat for treating these conditions and created Danggui Niantong Decoction,a prescription that has had a profound influence on later generations.
