A Metallurgical Study of Han Dynasty Iron Implements Unearthed from the Southeast of Heritage Site at the Ancient Government Seat of Luxian County,Beijing
The heritage site at the ancient government seat of Luxian County is an important Han Dynasty city in Beijing. The study of iron implements from this region should yield important evidence concerning the regional iron-making techniques used and the local iron industry. Our analysis focuses on the metallographic features and chemical compositions of inclusions in the examined objects. The results reveal that except for 2 pieces of carbonized steel, the analyzed samples are made of pig iron as raw material which was further processed with techniques of casting, annealing after casting, decarbonizing by stirring, etc.During the Han Dynasties,Luxian region had developed a rather complete iron production system centered by pig iron smelting.
