Thoracic fluid retention is an important component of the"Synopsis of the Golden Chamber".However,it has long been controversy about the meaning of its disease naming.Later generations of medical practitioners have provided explanations of the naming meaning of this disease from the perspective of medical theory or clinical practice,while those who explore it from the perspective of philology are relatively rare.Based on philology,and combined with an analysis of Zhang Zhongjing's original records,it is believed that the"branch"in thoracic fluid retention means"support",and the disease name thoracic fluid retention means"shuiyin that supports the chest and diaphragm".Thoracic fluid retention supporting the chest and diaphragm,along with phlegm and fluid retention located in the abdomen,anasarcous fluid retention in the limbs,and suspending fluid retention in the chest and rib,cover most of the human body.The above content and the article"water in five zang viscera"complement each other,such as"water in the heart"and"water in the lungs",which constructs Zhang Zhongjing's theoretical system of diagnosis and treatment of phlegm and fluid retention.
