Predicting geothermal resource potential of western Sichuan Plateau based on weighted information model
The western Sichuan Plateau is an important region for high-temperature geothermal resources in China. However, our current understanding of the distribution of the geothermal potential of the area remains limited. This study uses publicly available data on geothermal hotspots(hot springs),faults, granites, the surface temperature, anomalies in the Bouguer gravity, aeromagnetic anomalies, and seismic factors in the western Sichuan Plateau to establish a weighted information modelto assess the potential of geothermal resources in the western Sichuan Plateau. The results of a spatial analysis showed that geothermal hotspots in the area were negatively correlated with the distances to faults and granites, and exhibited a significant spatial correlation with high land surface temperatures, low aeromagnetic anomalies, high anomalies in the Bouguer gravity, and low Gutenberg-Richter b-values.The model predicted that Kangding,Litang, and Batang had a high geothermal potential, and should thus form the focus of geothermal exploration and development in the western Sichuan Plateau. Moreover,Ganzi,Baiyu,Xinlong,Luhuo,Daofu,Derong, and Danba exhibited considerable geothermal potential, and should be considered for geothermal exploration activities in the future.
