Spatial Distribution Characteristics of Village Toponymic Cultural Landscape in Fujian Province
Village names,as fundamental elements of the cultural landscape, are rapidly diminishing and urgently need protection and preservation. This study classifies 67 888 natural village names in Fujian Province using grounded theory, exploring their composition characteristics and spatial distribution heterogeneity across different geographical and cultural regions. The findings indicate that villages are mainly concentrated in plains below 258 meters, particularly in the Minnan Hai Broadcasting and Mindong Jiangying cultural areas, with fewer in mountainous regions like Minbei Shangen and Minbei Transitional cultural areas.Natural village names related to animals, natural phenomena, and landforms show similar spatial distribution, while plant-related names are mainly in inland mountainous areas.Human and abstract element-related names are concentrated in the Minnan region, especially northern Quanzhou City, while construction engineering and social culture-related names are primarily in core coastal areas.Municipal-level village names are diverse, focusing on construction engineering and geographical features, with Nanping,Xiamen, and Longyan emphasizing construction engineering and village characteristics, and Fuzhou exhibiting more diverse and comprehensive characteristics. This study highlights the profound relationship between village names, their geographical and environmental backgrounds, and social and cultural heritage, underscoring the significant role of village names in environmental and cultural historical changes.
