The theoretical foundations of spatio-temporal big data from five perspectives are analyzed initially in this paper,which include the space-time views in philosophy,the space-time views of national governance and social management,the space-time views of military command and actions,the space-time views of the expression in nonlinear complex geographic science,and the space-time views inherent to big data.Subsequently,the essence,structure,and characteristics of spatio-temporal big data are discussed.On this basis,the foundational platform for spatio-temporal big data applications,namely,the spatio-temporal big data platform,is described,which includes detailing its essence,functions,key technologies,adopted standards,technological architecture,characteristics of service sharing,and development trends.Moreover,the current service models are comprehensively analyzed and compared based on Web Service for spatial information sharing and spatial data interoperability,Grid Service for information resource sharing and collaborative work,and Cloud Computing for geographic information services.A technical regime for the spatio-temporal big data platform that integrates"grid integration"and"elastic cloud"is proposed.Its key technologies and the"Shared Spatio-temporal Big Data Platform+"application conceptual model are discussed and introduced.Finally,the role of the spatio-temporal big data platform in the construction of Digit-al China,the development of the digital economy,and the National Integrated Computing Network Project is ex-plored further.
