The Development of Business Education in the Ethnic Chinese Community in Singapore in the 1920s——A Case Study Based on the Chinese Industrial and Commercial Continuation School
With the increasingly fierce competition in business and in-dustry,the ethnic Chinese community in Singapore began to attach impor-tance to the development of business education under the influence of the idea of commercial warfare. The establishment of the Chinese Industrial and Com-mercial Continuation School in the early 1920s was a typical example at that time.Based on the exploration of the curriculum of business education, the school invited people from the industry to give lectures on commodity knowl-edge,opened a rattan products workshop, held rattan products exhibitions, organized students'visits to local ethnic Chinese enterprises and factories, and published Industrial and Commercial Weekly to bring the school closer to the society, strengthening the realistic needs orientation and practical char-acteristics of business education while giving full play of practice education. This case reveals to us that, although the development of business education at that time was confronted with difficulties due to the constraints of the era and social environment, the progressive and farsighted exploration of busi-ness education did have an important impact on the social enlightenment and human capital accumulation of the ethnic Chinese community in modern Sin-gapore.
