Textual Analysis of the Images of Persons with Disabilities in Picture Books Through the Lens of Media Frame
To explore the role of picture books in shaping the image of persons with disabilities,we sampled 19 picture books winning the Fulanya Picture Book Award, then performed a systematic textual analysis of the images of persons with disabilities in the books using the theory of media frame, and divided the images into three major categories:images of persons with disabilities with typical characteristics, inactive and negative images of persons with disabilities, and proactive and positive images of persons with disabilities. These images are not only closely related to current disability research, but also emphasize the identity of persons with disabilities as normal members of the society from the humanistic value perspective, contributing to the guidance of social understanding and acceptance of persons with disabilities, and reflecting the awakening of persons with disabilities from self-perceived weakness and social burden to self-recognition of their own special social values.
