Digital economy, industrial structure upgrading, and regional green development——Taking the Yangtze River Delta region as an example
In the era of digital information, the digital economy has become the leading force in shaping China's new competitive advantage and injecting new impetus into green development.Green development,as an economic development approach that emphasizes efficiency, harmony, and sustainability,is gradually becoming an important direction for China's economic and social transformation. As one of the most dynamic economic regions in China, the Yangtze River Delta region's green transformation and development are of great significance for promoting the overall green development of China. However, current academic research on the relationship between digital economy and green development mostly stays at the provincial level, and the research objects are mostly focused on a single industry, with little in-depth exploration of urban agglomerations.Based on the data of 27 cities in the Yangtze River Delta from 2011 to 2021,this paper conducts empirical analysis by measuring the development level of digital economy and combining with regional green development data, aiming to explore the impact of digital economy on green development in the Yangtze River Delta and its internal mechanism, and analyze its spatial spillover effect. This study not only enriches the theoretical system of the relationship between digital economy and green development, but also provides practical reference for promoting green transformation and development in the Yangtze River Delta region and even the whole country.By delving into how the digital economy promotes green development through pathways such as industrial structure upgrading, this article provides valuable insights for policy makers. This article first reviews the literature on digital economy, green development, and the relationship between digital economy and green development, and then points out the shortcomings of current research when proposes innovative research points.Based on existing theories, this article proposes four hypotheses.First, the digital economy can promote regional green development;secondly the upgrading of industrial structure has a promoting effect on regional green development;thirdly, the digital economy can promote regional green development through industrial structure upgrading;fourthly, the digital economy has a positive spatial spillover effect on regional green development. In terms of research methods, this article establishes panel data models, mechanism effect models, and spatial econometric models to analyze the impact and mechanisms of the digital economy on regional green development. At the same time,it selects the data of 27 cities in the Yangtze River Delta from 2011—2021 to build a digital economy level evaluation index system that includes digital industrialization, industrial digitalization, digital infrastructure and other dimensions. The main research conclusions of this article are as follows.( 1 ) The digital economy can significantly promote green development in the Yangtze River Delta region, and all dimensions have a significant promoting effect on green development, among which the promotion effect of digital infrastructure construction is the most significant.(2) Mechanism analysis shows that the digital economy promotes green development through the indirect path of promoting industrial structure upgrading.( 3 ) Although the digital economy has spatial spillover effects,it has not shown a significant promoting effect on green development in neighboring regions.(4) The development of digital economy in non resource-based cities can effectively promote regional green development, while in resource-based cities, the development of digital economy has a certain inhibitory effect on regional green development.Based on the above conclusions, the article proposes the following suggestions.First, actively promote the development of the digital economy by fully leveraging the leading role of the government in the development of the digital economy, accelerating the construction of digital infrastructure, and enhancing the overall level of the digital economy.Secondly, promote the upgrading of industrial structure by promoting the digital transformation of traditional industries and facilitating the development of high-tech industries and modern service industries, and achieving the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure.Thirdly, implement a differentiated development strategy tailored to the resource endowments and development status of different regions, ensuring that the green development effects of the digital economy can be fully realized.Fourthly, strengthen regional cooperation and exchanges by breaking geographical boundaries, strengthening information exchange and cooperation among cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, and jointly building a good ecological environment for green development. The implementation of the above measures will help further promote the green transformation and development of the Yangtze River Delta region and even the whole country, and achieve sustainable development economically and socially.
