Variations of aesthetics in China from the perspective of tragedy and comedy as categories
Aesthetics has complex variations in the process of dissemination across multiple countries, and the literary transformation of aesthetics is a significant phenomenon. From a philosophical perspective, categories include attributes and species.Beauty is an attribute, within which sublimity and elegance,as species, constitute a set of categories of beauty.Tragedy, comedy, and beauty do not have a species-attribute relationship.Sublimity and elegance in aesthetics act upon visual imagery, while tragedy and comedy have nothing to do with vision. In aesthetics from ancient Greece to the 18th century, tragedy and comedy were not considered as aesthetics or aesthetic categories.Subsequently, through the extension of sublimity and elegance into the literary domain by German and Soviet scholars, tragedy and comedy,as counterparts of sublimity and elegance in literature, were established as aesthetic categories. In this process, not only did sublimity and elegance undergo variation, being discussed beyond the visual domain, but tragedy and comedy also under-went variation, becoming species that constitute the category of beauty. This European-derived aesthetics, which accepted more non-visual objects or elements, has shaken the fundamental points related to aesthetic sense and audiovisual sensa-tions,leading to many intertwined and complex problems. After entering China, aesthetics underwent variation,unques-tionably considering tragedy and comedy as aesthetic or aesthetic categories. However, the concept of picturesque art,as a natural aesthetic concept, limited its scope of discussion to travel writings about the lake areas and Scottish Highlands in the UK.Due to its clear referents and formal features,it is difficult to undergo variation.Without corresponding theat-rical genres, picturesque art has almost been forgotten by the Chinese academic community.Aesthetics in China has var-ied into a discipline closer to literary theory, drifting further away from philosophy and natural aesthetics.
