An exploration of the language style of Ge Liang's novels
As an important writer in contemporary Hong Kong literature,Ge Liang has won the Lu Xun Prize for Litera-ture for his novella Flying Hair,and in recent years,he has further attracted the attention of the academic community with his new novel Food Is Heaven.However,researchers have either focused on the food and Lingnan culture in his no-vels,or reconsidered Ge Liang's nostalgia for the history and culture of the Republic of China and his craftsmanship since The Northern Kite,favoring cultural interpretations,but most of them have neglected to analyze and examine the language of his novels.The language style of his novels is rich and diverse.In his early short story collection Seven Voices,his novels are characterized by short sentences with a sense of rhythm and restrained language in content,often conveying the character information and emotions in a simple,clean,plain,restrained and implicit style.Since his first full-length novel Vermilion Bird,Ge Liang has demonstrated his meticulous and unhurried narrative posture through the integration of classical vocabulary,the use of ellipses and inverted sentences,and the rhythm of narration in which long and short sentences are generated,thus enhancing the novel's simple and elegant language style.This classical flavor is further strengthened in his another novel,The Northern Kite.At the same time,Ge Liang is also constantly experimenting and changing the language style.In his novels such as Monkey,Flying Hair,and Food Is Heaven,his narrative language is mixed with a variety of literary styles,languages,and dialects.Through the deviation of register and dialect,he further promotes the diversification,vividness,and flexibility of language styles within the novels,and combines them into a noisy mix.As a result,Ge Liang's novels gradually formed his unique language style.
