Cellular senescence involves a stress-induced program that leads to terminal cell cycle arrest.The effects of senescence are evident in many physiological and pathological conditions.Studies have shown that cellular senescence plays a decisive role in the development and progression of a healthy pregnancy.Premature senescence of maternal and fetal tissues(decidua and placenta)is as-sociated with many adverse pregnancy outcomes,including recurrent miscarriages,recurrent implantation failures,fetal growth restric-tion,and pre-eclampsia.This article provides a thorough review of cellular senescence and its relation to normal pregnancy progression and adverse pregnancy outcomes through a comprehensive analysis of the latest literature on the topic.
