Monkeypox is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus(MPXV).On August 14,2024,the World Health Organization(WHO)declared monkeypox a new international public health emergency of international concern,marking the second time in the past two years that an MPXV-related emergency has been so designated.Since the emergence of the most recent large-scale monkeypox outbreak in 2022,over 100 countries have been impacted,with both incidence and mortality rates on the rise.The 2024 outbreak has exhibited significant differences in pathogenicity and epidemiology compared to previous outbreaks in Africa and the 2022-2023 outbreak.This review synthesizes the pathogenicity,epidemiological characteristics,and prevention and treatment strategies for the 2024 monkeypox outbreak,aiming to enhance understanding and preparedness for a potential monkeypox outbreak in China.
