CONTENTS AND CASE STUDY OF OPEN SPACE PLANNING IN THE USA
There are different guidelines for urban open space system planning in the USA,including not only national guidelines but also state-level and city-level specific requirements. The Park,Recreation,Open Space and Greenway Guidelines, issued in 1995 by NRPA which is the most important nonprofit organization in the USA,is the national open space guideline for all the cities in the USA,including planning contents, methods, and open space classifications and standards. The statelevel guideline,SORP,focuses on the investigation and evaluation of the recreational needs, clarifies the role and responsibility of institutions, and provides development strategies for sponsors and suppliers. The city-level guideline for urban open space system planning conducts demand investigations and evaluations based on public participation and community population, and coordinates and satisfies the different demands and interests between communities, developers, and local governments through management strategies. The case study on Boston shows the differences between open space system planning in the USA and green space planning in China.Starting with the investigation on the residents' recreational demands, the open space system planning in the USA takes the quantitative analysis on the investigation results and prediction as the basis, integrates spatial resources with social resources, combines project scheming with supply plan, and attaches great importance to the systematization from demand investigation and planning formulation to implementation and operation.
