A Diachronic and Synchronic Investigation of the Conjunction/Preposition"Weiyin"
Regarding the disappearance time of the conjunction"weiyin",some believe it had vanished by the time of Dream of the Red Chamber,while others argue it had disappeared by the time of Journey to the West.In fact,"weiyin"continued to exist in vernacular literature from the Ming and Qing Dynasties following Journey to the West,and it was used with a certain frequency.It also appeared in Qing Dynasty contractual documents from Ningbo,Shanghai,and Pingtan in Fujian,as well as in contractual documents from the Qingshui River basin in Guizhou during the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.In modern times,"weiyin"is occasionally used in some dialects.Similar to"yinwei","weiyin"functions both as a conjunction and a preposition.The term"weiyin"is predominantly found in southern regions,which have more"BA"-type words compared to the north,and its occurrence in the Qingshui River basin may also be related to other ethnic languages in Guizhou.
