Divergence of Ditransitives Induced by Intra-phylum Uniqueness under the Guise of Areal Convergence:Chinese Varieties and Beyond in SEA Area
Ditransitive constructions are a group of constructions crucial in the Southeast Asia Area(henceforth,SEA Area for short). In this group,VTR double object constructions, rare cross-linguistically but dominant in SEA Area, were derived from the caused-motion serial verb constructions by omitting the second co-verb,a feature prominent in southeastern dialects except the Min dialect. Some languages used in ethnic communities in Southern China then disseminated these constructions by way of format replication. However, this shared regional feature and its evolutionary path may only be a part of the whole story. As a matter of fact, the phyla in SEA Area,by their own uniqueness in terms of syntax, morphology, key functional morphemes and rhythm, has revealed diverse paths of construction-diverging,e.g.,word-forming of GIVE from the caused-motion serial verb constructions.
