Comprehensive Design of Urban Roads:a Case Study of Guangzhou
The urban road design primarily focuses on the engineering indicators related to motorized traf-fic,lacking systematic analysis and organization of street factors based on human-centered needs, and hence failing to meet the demand of travelers for high-quality street spaces.Building upon a summary of domestic and international street design research, this paper proposes key technical points for comprehen-sive urban road design. It aims to achieve refined design and optimization of urban street spaces by estab-lishing the interactive rules between human behavior and street quality and their deep mapping relationship with street factors. The Guangzhou Complete Street Design Manual explores and establishes a comprehen-sive urban road design system based on human-centered needs, encompassing road classification,function-al modules, and the matching of all factors. The classification system is developed to include seven major categories and 23 sub-categories of road-street functions. The recommended forms, applicable scopes, and key design points of nine functional modules are summarized, with the design guideline for 90 factors asso-ciated with six major street systems.Taking the street renovation project in Guangzhou as an example, the paper elaborates on street quality evaluation, priority design of pedestrian and non-motorized traffic, and the application of integrated design methods under the human-centered concept.
