The Impact of Time Matching on School Commute Modes for School-Age Children
Improving the commute time constraints of students and parents, and optimizing or altering chil-dren's school travel modes are beneficial measures for alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing safety.Based on the time geography theory, this paper introduces a method for assessing the level of time match-ing between children's school commute time and parents'commute time.Three types of time matching values are identified, including time system constraint, ample travel time, and travel time constraint. The paper employs a multinomial Logit model to analyze the impact of various parental time matching values on children's school travel modes. The results show that the level of time matching between parents and children significantly impacts the choice of school travel modes.Under differing time matching conditions, children's school travel modes show a strong correlation with the parent's gender. For morning school commute, the proportion of car travel increases when mothers and children are under time system con-straints;conversely,for after-school commute, fathers under time system constraints are more likely to in-crease the likelihood of children walking from school.Consequently, when developing policies to encour-age walking to and from schools,it is essential to consider the influence of time systems and the context of school commute times.
