Study on the Segregation Phenomenon of Urban Villages in the Context of Urban-Rural Integration:A Case of the Fourth Street Community
This paper selects the Fourth Street Community in Qinghe Street,Beijing,a typical urban village,as an example.By means of semi-structured interviews, data collection, field investigation, and spatial syntax analysis methods, etc.,the paper analyzes the segregation challenges confronted by urban villages within the context of urban-rural integration from the perspectives of both spatial and social dimensions. It is found that urban villages are typically situated on the outskirts of cities or in areas with distinct locational disadvantages, and are less connected to the outside.Meanwhile, their internal spatial integration, accessibility and intentionality are usually relatively low.The residents and tenants in urban villages seldom go out and have single social network. The case is particularly serious for the tenants.Besides, there is not much communication between the residents and tenants. The residents in the urban villages have varying degrees of social segregation.
