The Development and Evolution of Superblock Road Network in China and the West
The superblock is a product of the binary planning concept, reflected in the strong contrast between the boundary roads and internal roads in planning, construction and control, which then presents internal and external differences in form and function. In China and the west, superblocks have developed various paradigms due to their different origins and development processes. However, the existing studies have generally adopted a critical attitude towards superblocks, neglecting their value and potential as a scale hierarchy that organizes urban form and function beyond the block scale. This paper analyzes the definition of superblock, sorts out its development and evolution in China and the west, and extracts typical paradigms and variants of road networks in each stage.
