Based on the seventh national population census of Shaanxi Province and relevant socio-economic data, this paper explores the spatial distribution characteristics and in-fluencing factors of the population separate between registered and actual residences in the Xi'an metropolitan area by means of location entropy, population agglomeration, spatial autocorre-lation,and partial least squares regression model. It is found that the overall spatial distribution of the Xi'an metropolitan are-a presents a characteristic of clustering towards the core circle of the metropolitan area.Economy and transportation are the main influencing factors, while housing, public services and systems are the secondary influencing factors. The main reasons behind them are the unbalanced development of the central and periph-eral industries, the unbalanced allocation of regional public re-sources,and the lagging reform of the household registration sys-tem.Based on this, the corresponding countermeasures and sug-gestions are proposed.
