Promoting innovation and development in old revolutionary base areas is a crucial mission for achieving coordi-nated regional development in the new era.Since the 18th Na-tional Congress of the Communist Party of China, the government has continuously increased support for the revitalization and de-velopment of old revolutionary base areas, and has introduced a series of support policies to support the revitalization and devel-opment of old revolutionary base areas. What impact will these policies have on the innovative development of old revolutionary base areas?Based on the panel data of five key old revolutionary base areas from 2009 to 2020,the PSM-DID method was used to examine the impact and mechanism of national priority support policies on the innovation efficiency of old revolutionary base ar-eas and explore the innovative development paths of old revolu-tionary base areas. The results show that the implementation of the national priority support policy has significantly improved the innovation efficiency of the old revolutionary base areas, and the conclusion is still valid after a series of robustness tests. The mechanism research finds that the national priority support policy promotes the improvement of innovation efficiency old revolution-ary base areas through three paths:increasing investment incen-tive effect, promoting industrial agglomeration and improving the level of informatization. The heterogeneity test shows that the policy effects of national priority support policies on cities with different characteristics of the old revolutionary base areas exhib-it significant differences, meaning that the support policy effects are more pronounced in cities with lower levels of investment in science and education, industrialization, and location advanta-ges.Therefore,further encouraging enterprises to increase in-vestment,enhance industrial agglomeration effect and improve information infrastructure are important measures to enhance the innovation ability of the old revolutionary base areas. The imple-mentation of differentiation strategy is conducive to improving the overall effect of the support policies of the old revolutionary base areas.
