Based on panel data from the county level in China from 2011 to 2021,the"National New Urbanization Com-prehensive Pilot"is treated as a quasi-natural experiment.A multi-period difference-in-differences model is employed to empirically test the impact of the new-type urbanization pilot policy on air quality. The study finds that:first, the new-type urbanization pilot policy significantly improves air quality;the higher the PM2.5 concentration, the greater the improvement effect of the pilot policy on air quality.Second, the new-type urbanization pilot policy significantly improves air quality through mechanisms such as increasing environmental aware-ness,enhancing innovation capabilities, and promoting efficien-cy gains.Third, the improvement effect of the new-type urban-ization pilot policy on air quality strengthens with the level of e-conomic development and internet development, and weakens with the increase in population size.Fourth, under the con-straints of economic growth targets, the new-type urbanization pilot policy's effect on improving air quality is strengthened, while the effect of environmental targets is not significant.
