A Study on the Reconstruction of Production-living Space Relationships and Gentrification in Traditional Industrial Areas:Taking the Yangpu Riverside Area in Shanghai as an Example
The Yangpu Riverside area in Shanghai has become the frontline of gentrification through large-scale renewal and reconstruction in recent years. Based on this background, this paper combines historical documents, planning texts, and case studies to examine the different stages of the reconfiguration of the production-living space relationship in the area since the end of the 19th century,in order to reveal the specificity of its gentrification. The study indicates that the relationship between factories and workers' residences in the Yangpu Riverside area has gone through five stages, which constitute the background, premise and process of gentrification, and demonstrate the core issues of the current renewal and reconstruction. Addressing these challenges will be the key for the future renewal of the area.
