Exposure and Health Risk Assessment of 5 VOCs in Children's Play Mats
To study the concentrations of different volatile organic compounds(VOCs)in children's play mats and their effects on health, the headspace-gas chromatography mass spectrometer was used to identify unknown chemi-cals in the play mats, and the gas sample bag method was used to study the concentrations of different chemicals released under different temperatures and materials.Furthermore,a risk assessment of the various VOCs in children's play mats was conducted using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The results showed that a variety of VOCs with various toxicities were present in play mats. The release of VOCs was not affected greatly by the material, but it was significantly influenced by the temperature. The concentrations of the chemicals increased as the temperature rose. The Monte Carlo method was used to assess the inhalation risks of toluene,xylene,n-butanol,acetone,and 2-butanone from children's play mats. The risk value of n-butanol was 1.65,which exceeds the ac-ceptable risk threshold within the 95%confidence interval. The risk values of other substances were less than 1,in-dicating a low level of health risks.
