Re-evaluating Wang Yi's annotations of"gusting wind"and"clouds and rainbow"as"petty men"in Chu Ci
In his annotations of Chu Ci,Wang Yi proposed the theoretical standard of interpreting"gusting wind"and"clouds and rainbow"as references to"petty men".His typical and universal exposition influenced many later theorists.Wang's annotations were heavily influenced by his personal emotions and political-cultural objectives, leading to far-fetched and forced interpretations when annotating Li Sao,resulting in numerous issues.Zhu Xi pointed out problems in Wang's annotations in his Collected Annotations of Chu Ciduring the Southern Song dynasty, but did not fully elucidate the true meanings of"gusting wind"and"clouds and rainbows"in Qu Yuan's poetry. To understand the true intentions behind Qu Yuan's use of"gusting wind"and"clouds and rainbows",one must return to the cultural context in which they originated in pre-Qin classics such as the Book of Songsand Laozi.Only then can we clarify the evolution of their connotations from Qu Yuan's original usage, through Wang's annotations,to Zhu's interpretations.
