A reappraisal of Tang Shunzhi's military achievements in Ming-Qing historiography:a study based on Ming Veritable Records,Xishan Diary, and Wubianin Siku Quanshu
In the mid-to-late Jiajing period, the Ming dynasty faced mounting external threats from Japanese pirates(Wokou)and northern minority incursions, pushing the empire to the brink of crisis.During this turbulent time,Tang Shunzhi,a military strategist known for his expertise, was reappointed after a long period of deprecation and played a pivotal role in the defense against the Wokou. However, his later military achievements have been subjected to various degrees of negation and criticism in Ming and Qing historical texts, most notably in Ming Veritable Records,Xishan Diary, and Wubianin Siku Quanshu.By conducting a critical analysis of these sources, this paper seeks to offer a more objective and equitable understanding of Tang Shunzhi's military achievements.
