Cultivation of Young Trees of 'Aisi' Chestnut by Root Restriction in Xinyang
A cultivation experiment on root restriction was conducted to explore a new approach by which the young chestnut trees can reach high yield in early phase. Three kinds of substances, asphalt felt, perlite board and solid clay brick, were used as obstructions in the cultivation of the new variety Castanen mollissima 'Aisi' in the southern Henan Province. The experiment conducted during six years indicates that nutrition and reproduction of the treated trees are both better than those of the control ( no restriction substances). The flower buds of the treated trees by perlite board form stably, and the effects on controlling crown size and lowering trunk height are remarkable, so the yield increases steadily. In the sixth year, the yield of each individual tree is twice as much as the control.
