Surface Coating Performance of Polyolefin-Based Wood-Plastic Composites
Coating is a key pathway to increase the added value and expand applications of wood-plastic composite (WPC) by enhancing its anti-aging properties and decorative effects.Six types and sixteen kinds of coatings, such as wood wax, acry-late, polyurethane, fluorocarbon, silicone and acrylic polyurethane based coatings, were employed to paint polyethylene (PE)-based and polypropylene (PP)-based WPC samples. The coating contact angle and film adhesion were tested to e-valuate the finishing performance. The contact angle of PE-based WPC is lower than that of PP-based WPC, while the con-tact angle between waterborne coating and WPC material is higher than that of organic solvent coating based on the same film-forming resin. The film adhesion varies from the types and the kinds of the coatings, while the film adhesion between PP-based WPC and most coatings are slightly higher than that of PE-based WPC.Considering the factors of the coating contact angle, the film adhesion and the appearance, the coatings with wood wax, polyurethane, acrylic polyurethane, flu-orocarbon and organic silicon are good, and the coatings with the organic silicon and acrylic polyurethane are better.
