The Manifestation of Rationality Depends on the Interaction of Emotions—Theory and Practice of Emotional Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era
The major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era demonstrates a distinctive style of"a blend of emotion and reason, with sincerity and warmth,"which has greatly enhanced China's international influence, appeal, and shaping power. However,to date,Chinese academics have not yet conducted any systematic theoretical research on emotional diplomacy. In light of this, this paper seeks to construct a theory of emotional diplomacy by drawing on the"Chinese School"of international relations theory and the research path of"historical political science."Firstly, the theory of emotional diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era actively draws on traditional historical and cultural resources, which contains the triple theoretical logic of modernizing the"the state of Tianxia(all under heaven),"the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and the politics of people's hearts.Secondly, based on the theoretical connotations of emotional diplomacy, three dimensions can be deduced:the worldview of"the world as one big family,"the methodology of"a world of no exteriority and only interiority,"and the values of"edifying the populace so that the rule by civil means can prosper."Finally, this paper abstracts and refines the theoretical paradigm of emotional diplomacy and conducts a preliminary verification in combination with the practice of Chinese diplomacy in the new era.Practice shows that emotional diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era, which balances and integrates emotion and reason in handling international relations, can help to further strengthen China's voice in diplomacy and present a credible, amiable, and respectable image of China.
